Buderus Combination boilers

Buderus UK have advised of a potential issue with the 500 series and 600 series 28kW Combination boiler. The 500 series was particularly popular with Local Authorities and Registered Social landlords for its functionality and serviceability.

The information outlined below gives the detail of the potential non-safety critical issue recently identified on an isolated number of these products when annual servicing was undertaken.

The boilers affected are:

  • 500 series 24kW Combination boiler
  • 500 series 28kW Combination boiler
  • 500 series 24kW System boiler
  • 600 series 28kW combination boiler

All other Buderus boilers are unaffected and not in need of any remedial action covered within this bulletin.

The Issue
The 500 and 600 series has an extruded aluminium coil heat exchanger with a down-firing burner. It has been identified during the annual servicing of these appliances of a small number of minor gas leaks. The gas leaks in question are very small and contained within the combustion chamber cover so are sealed from the room.

The leak can appear through the grommets surrounding the ignition glow plug and flame sense electrode or/and the seal between the two halves of the air/gas unit.

Solution
The Buderus service department have instigated a programme to ensure all of the affected appliances will be visited and remedial action taken.

The service department will be replacing any leaking grommets and seals and fitting an additional thermostat to the air/gas unit. This will provide added protection against high temperatures being reached and reduce the likelihood of premature seal degradation.
