Additional CORGI Registration - 05/09/2007 11:30

CORGI is now adjusting the cost of additional CORGI registrations to make it easier and less costly for individual operatives to work on “private jobs” legally, as part of its ongoing commitment to gas safety and to streamline membership to benefit of registered installers. As a result of this existing members can now take an additional registration at a much lower price with less hassle.

To carry out private work (i.e. work not organised by their CORGI registered employer) legally, the operative must be registered with CORGI in their own right. Research has shown that this doesn’t always happen, with some operatives risking prosecution for a comparatively small number of jobs.

Operatives must be aware that they may be in breech of their employment contract if they undertake private work, so it is strongly advised to get permission from the employer before taking out an additional CORGI registration.

Under the Gas Safety (Installation & Use) Regulations, any business or individual that carries out gas work as a business (i.e. for financial gain) must be registered with CORGI.  Up until now, businesses or operatives who wish to work outside their current registration have had to pay a registration and assessment fee amounting to £375 plus VAT. CORGI is now offering an additional CORGI registration to both businesses and operatives, which cuts out the assessment fee, resulting in a cost saving of £200 plus VAT. Each Additional Registration application will be limited to one competent individual applying .

Examples could be:

  • A partnership (two operatives) wish to set up an Additional Registration for one of the two current operatives for a specific area of work - such as contracts for all new build properties for various clients.
  • An operative of a business wishes to carry out private work for family and friends during his evenings and weekends, therefore an Additional Registration would accommodate this.
  • This latest change to CORGI’s process will not affect how new applications are dealt with. Applicants will still need to follow the normal route and pay an Application Fee and be seen by a CORGI Inspector prior to registration.

To apply for an additional registration, please call our Customer Services department 0800 915 0485; quoting PBAR.

Make your private work legal…

  • a reduced cost of an additional membership only available to existing members – pay the Registration Fee only (£175 plus VAT)
  • the Application Fee (£200 plus VAT) will be waived (at CORGI’s discretion) if you are already a registered business or a competent operative of a business and we know your history (if you have been registered for a minimum of 6-months)
  • no Application Pack fee (£10 plus VAT)
  • no pre-visit needed by a CORGI Inspector, meaning less time off work
