If you are going abroad and you are concerned about the dangers of Carbon Monoxide poisoning, there are a number of things that they can do to keep yourself safe whilst on holiday:
- Check what gas safety precautions your tour operator has in place.
- Check if there is an audible Carbon Monoxide alarm fitted in the accommodation.
- If there isn't an alarm fitted, take your own. Make sure it meets European standards, has an audible alarm and a removable battery. You will need to remove the battery from the alarm before travelling and replace it once you have arrived at your destination. Place it near the appliance or in the bedroom, but make sure you follow the manufacturer's instructions.
- Do not use a 'black spot' Carbon Monoxide detector. These are often inaccurate and will not alert you of the presence of Carbon Monoxide if you are asleep, out of the room or overcome by Carbon Monoxide fumes.
- Remember the symptoms such as nausea, tiredness and headaches. If you suffer from these whilst indoors, but feel better outside seek urgent medical attention, and mention that you suspect Carbon Monoxide poisoning.
- Look out for signs on the appliance such as black marks or stains, lazy orange instead of crisp blue pilot light flames and excessive condensation in the room.
If you purchase a Carbon Monoxide alarm to take with you on holiday, remember to use it at home once you get back.
