Fit An Audible Carbon Monoxide Alarm

Fitting a CE-approved audible carbon monoxide alarm is the next best thing to do, apart from having your gas appliances safety checked. In fact, if you cannot get a safety check booked in immediately, you should buy an alarm now and fit it straight away. It will provide protection until your appliances can be properly checked and certified healthy.

A carbon monoxide alarm typically cost around £25, which is a small price to pay if it saves a life. They are available from a number of sources.

  • You may be able to buy a CE-approved carbon monoxide alarm from your CORGI installer.
  • You can buy one directly from a trade outlet.
  • You can buy a Carbon Monoxide alarm from CORGI.

When you buy a carbon monoxide alarm, make sure it meets current British and European safety standards. You will see the ‘CE’ and ‘BS’ marks clearly displayed on the packaging. Always choose an audible version so that you will be alerted even if you are asleep. Always read the manufacturer’s instructions carefully before you install it.

There are also ‘black spot’ carbon monoxide detectors available for about £5. CORGI does not recommend them. Although they are much cheaper than CE-approved audible alarms, they are often inaccurate and cannot alert you if you are out of the room or overcome by fumes. This could be the difference between life and death, so don’t chance it.

Remember that carbon monoxide alarms must never be used instead of an annual gas safety check. They are an extra defence. There is no alternative to proper installation and maintenance of your appliances, and an awareness of living safely with gas.
