Building Engineering Services (BES) National/Scottish Vocational Qualifications (N/SVQ).
It is recognised that the Building Engineering Sector is made up of a number of different engineering skills and disciplines that are carried out in both domestic and commercial premises, gas only being one of them. This area of the web site provides some useful information of those BES qualifications that are available and their relationship with CORGI and the gas industry.

1. Plumbing
The most common N/SVQ CORGI receive questions about is regarding plumbing. Currently City and Guilds have approved the N/SVQ 6089 award which is commonly available in colleges and training centres in the UK. The entry level for individuals intending to undertake the plumbing qualification is at Level 2 and like the gas award will take approximately 2 years to complete; it also encompasses the Level 2 Plumbing Technical Certificate.
Once the level 2 award has been completed candidates can continue to work towards the level 3 award and opt to include gas or oil If gas is the chosen option candidates will undertake appropriate ACS assessments in either natural or liquefied petroleum gas, providing they can access work placed gas work experience with a CORGI registered business. The level 3 award will take approximately 12 months to complete once the level 2 has been achieved; like the level 2 award it also encompasses the Level 3 Plumbing Technical Certificate.
On completion of the level 3 award (with gas ACS option) individuals can apply for membership with CORGI to legally carry out gas work.
2. Heating and Ventilation (H&V)
The current H&V qualification available to individuals is the City & Guilds N/SVQ 6088 at level 2&3. This award covers a wide range of H&V engineering activities across both domestic and non domestic sectors.
The award is broken into a number of disciplines:
- Heating and Ventilation (H&V) Domestic Installation N/SVQ 6088-01 Level 2.
This award covers the installation, service, maintenance of H&V and Ductwork in Domestic premises at installer level.
- Heating and Ventilation Complex Installation Domestic N/SVQ 6088-05 Level 3.
This award is a for candidates who intend to carry out H&V work in Domestic premises at craft level.
Note: Candidates undertaking a Domestic H&V award will need to have access to work placed gas work experience in domestic premises with a CORGI registered business if they choose gas as the fuel option and undertake appropriate ACS assessments if they intend to register with CORGI.
- Heating and Ventilation Industrial & Commercial N/SVQ 6088-02 Level 2.
This award covers the installation, commissioning and decommissioning of H&V systems in I&C premises at installer level.
- Heating and Ventilation Industrial & Commercial N/SVQ 6088-06 Level 3.
This award is for candidates who have achieved N/SVQ 6088-02 level 2 award and want to extend their competencies and acquire a more in depth knowledge of H&V systems in Industrial & Commercial premises.
- Heating and Ventilation Maintenance of systems N/SVQ 6088-03 Level 2.
This award covers the service and maintenance of H&V systems including, planning routine maintenance, deactivating and reactivating systems, testing, fault diagnosis and rectification.
- Heating and Ventilation Rectification of systems N/SVQ 6088-07 Level 3.
This award covers the rectification of system problems across the range of Heating, Air Conditioning and Ventilation.
Note: Candidates undertaking an Industrial & Commercial H&V award will need to have access to work placed gas work experience in Industrial; & Commercial premises with a CORGI registered business if they choose gas as the fuel option and undertake appropriate ACS assessments if they intend to register with CORGI.
3. Refrigeration & Air Conditioning
For individuals intending to pursue a career in the Refrigeration and air conditioning industry the City & Guilds N/SVQ 6087 award at level 2&3 is available covering a range of activities in commercial premises.
Refrigeration & Air Conditioning N/SVQ 6087 -02
- This award covers the installation, commissioning and decommissioning, maintenance, servicing and fault diagnosis and rectification of small commercial systems. Candidates successfully completing this award will have demonstrated their competence at craft level.
- Refrigeration & Air Conditioning N/SVQ 6087 -03
This award covers the installation, commissioning and decommissioning, maintenance, servicing and fault diagnosis and rectification of industrial and commercial systems. Candidates successfully completing this award will have demonstrated their competence at craft level.
4. Oil
The qualification for candidates intending to work within the oil industry is the NSVQ 0785 or SVQ 0786; these awards are available at level 2&3
Both awards have been developed to meet the legal and environmental requirement in this sector. They cover the building regulations including the environmental and legal requirements you need to conform to work legally within the sector.
On completion operatives must register with The Oil Firing Technical Association (OFTEC) to be able to notify works covered by the Building Regulations.
