Gas Services N/SVQ's

Gas Services National/Scottish Vocational Qualifications (N/SVQ).

Gas Services N/SVQ’s are the preferred route for new entrants into the gas industry who want to work in the Domestic Natural Gas (NG) Sector. They cover Installation, commissioning, serving and maintaining most domestic gas installations and appliances.

There are currently a number of Gas Services N/SVQ’s currently available for candidates to undertake, they are the City and Guilds:

  • N/SVQ 6012 Installation and Maintenance Level 2
  • N/SVQ 6012 Installation and Maintenance Level 3
  • N/SVQ 6012 Installation and Maintenance Level 2 & 3 Appliance Pathway Routes (APR)
  • N/SVQ 6012 Emergency Service Operations (ESO) level 3

All of these qualifications are recognised by CORGI as suitable for membership with the gas scheme as they have been aligned with, and have equivalence to ACS as shown in the ACS-N/SVQ Alignment Table.

  • The N/SVQ 6012 level 2 is an entry level domestic natural gas qualification suitable for all individuals who intend to work across a range of domestic appliances, once completed you will be eligible to apply for CORGI membership without the need to undertake further assessment. Typical duration to complete - 2 years.

  • The N/SVQ 6012 level 3 is a continuation of the level 2 covering the same scope but dealing with more complex NG systems and components. In addition it will cover other skills such as:
    (i)  establishing, maintaining and developing effective working relationships
(ii) contributing to the improvement of business products and services.
Typical duration to complete – 1 year (after level 2 achieved).

  • The N/SVQ 6012 level 2/3 APR are appliance specific qualifications for individuals who specialise in a particular area of work, like the full award they are available at levels 2 and 3. APR qualifications are available for central heating/water heating, cookers/laundry, space heating and meter installers. As with the full award once completed you will be eligible to apply for CORGI membership without the need to undertake further assessment, however your membership will be limited to specific areas of gas work Typical duration to complete – From 16 weeks (Cookers) – 26 weeks (Central/water Heating).

  • The N/SVQ 6012 level 3 (ESO) was developed for the National Emergency Service Provider (ESP) to assess the competence of their operatives; this award is not generally available unless you are employed by an ESP. If you have completed one of these awards and are no longer employed by an ESP and wish to join the CORGI gas scheme this award will enable you to access ACS appliance assessments as it contains the equivalence of the ACS domestic core assessment CCN1

Other gas N/SVQ’s that are available are the City & Guilds:
NVQ 6034 - 01 Level 2 Domestic Natural Gas Installation
NVQ 6034 - 02 Level 2 Domestic Natural Gas Maintenance
NVQ 6034 - 03 Level 3 Domestic Natural Gas Installation
NVQ 6034 - 04 Level 3 Domestic Natural Gas Maintenance

Unlike the N/SVQ 6012 these awards have not been aligned with the ACS and therefore are not recognised by CORGI for membership purposes. If you have completed one of these awards you will be required to undertake an additional ACS assessment to be able to join CORGI.
