Managed Learning Programs (MLP) are training programs that should provide learners with the necessary skills, knowledge and experience that will enable them to access ACS assessment and CORGI Registration.
The following Questions and Answers explains the structure and application of a typical MLP.
Question
Who can take an MLP and are there any pre-requisites?
Answer
Unlike ACS assessment there are no pre-requisites to a MLP therefore anyone can undertake this type of training program.
Question
Are MLP a recognised qualification and equivalent to an N/SVQ?
Answer
No. The majority of MLP currently available are not accredited and only provide training in areas of gas safety, they do not cover whole job competency.
Question
What is involved and how long will it take?
Answer
The training program will typically start with an ‘off the job’ training element in a classroom and/or workshop environment within a training centre. Once a basic knowledge and understanding of gas utilisation has been acquired learners will have to complete an extended period of ‘on the job’ training and supervised practice under the direct supervision of a CORGI registered business. Training durations will vary from learner to learner depending on the scope and range of training being undertaken and previous experience. Guidance on training durations can be found in ACS Guidance Note 8.
Question
Who will provide the ‘on the job’ supervised practice with a CORGI registered business?
Answer
This depends on individual training providers, some will provide and/or organise work placements others may not.
Question
Should I undertake an N/SVQ or an MLP?
Answer
CORGI would always recommend that individuals intending to pursue a career in the gas industry to undertake an N/SVQ where available. Where an N/SVQ is not appropriate or available to an individual e.g. Non Domestic or LPG sector then an MLP can provide an acceptable alternative training program that will meet the pre-requisite to ACS assessment.
Question
Where can I take an MLP and how much will it cost?
Answer
All ACS Accredited Certification Bodies have produced MLP for their approved assessment centres to deliver and should be able to provide details of a training provider in your location. Costs will vary across different providers depending on the scope of the training program being undertaken, CORGI would always recommend that you carefully consider what is being delivered within the MLP before agreeing.
