How to Spot a Cowboy?

For us, a "cowboy" is someone operating without the appropriate training or certification. Our research has shown that they are more likely to do a poor quality job or leave your appliances in an unsafe condition.

Using a "cowboy"’ can put you and your family at serious risk through carbon monoxide poisoning.

Illegal gas worker is also less likely to offer you support in the event of an incident, which can cost you time and money and can be an incredibly frustrating experience. You must never use an illegal gas worker.

From 1st April 2009 mandatory register is operated by Gas Safe Register if you are based in England, Scotland or Wales. However, if you are based in Northern Ireland and Channel Islands, this is operated by CORGI.

"Cowboy" types

  •  “Full illegals” - people who carry out gas work without having any training – the handymen who so often appear on television programs like Rogue Traders.
  •  “Lapsed” illegal workers - previously held a CORGI registration but are no longer registered. They will have significant knowledge gaps regarding the latest legislation and regulations, which would impact upon their ability to work safely on gas.
  •  “Part Time” illegal gas worker - an operative of a Gas Safe registered business who carries out “private jobs”, typically for friends and family. Although the work is likely to be safe, installations cannot be notified and there is no insurance or warranty support available for customers.
